Photo Exhibition: The Hiddink Effect - The South Koreans on their Hero
|
Date: 7 February - 30 March 2010
Venue: National museum of ethnology, Leiden
Photojournalist: Mr. Paul van Riel
South Korea is the first Asian country to have reached the semi-final of soccer’s World Cup competition. Coach Guus Hiddink played a major part in the result. Hence his unbounded popularity in the country. Schoolgirls call out ‘Heedeenkuh’ if they hear that you come from the Netherlands.
Hiddink would seem to be the symbol of both the good and the beautiful. Women fall for him because of his appearance. And there even has been an autobiography - ‘My Way’ - published in South Korea.
Even while the World Cup competition was still being played the Dutch media were suggesting that Hiddink had changed South Korean society. One could even talk of a ‘Hiddink effect’. That effect is certainly true when applied to the conservative world of Korean soccer, where there has finally been a breakthrough in the strict hierarchy. Older players, no matter what their skills, were always given priority over younger players when the national team was being chosen. But Hiddink simply picked the best players.
In other sectors of society, such as the world of IT, the originally Confucian-based authority relationships had already started to become less rigid in the 1990s. Another aspect seems to be more important to the Koreans. They can be proud again of a country, which had lost some prestige because of politicians' bribery scandals. But let’s ask the South Koreans themselves. Has Hiddink changed their country? And what do they think of him?
